When Stroke Happens

Stroke brain CultureSmart WorkshopWhat happens when a patient with a suspected stroke is admitted to the Emergency Department? And what brings on strokes, the third leading cause of death* in the U.S.? What should medical interpreters know about interpreting for stroke patients?

In this workshop, Judy Clark, the stroke service nurse at Boston Medical Center, will follow patients from admission through evaluation, examining diagnosis and options for care and treatment. Clark will then observe patient care in the hospital's ICU and/or stroke floor, addressing neurological assessments, medications, care after "clot buster" drugs, rehab, feeding tubes, and stroke teaching. She will also discuss stroke's warning signs and symptoms.

After attending this workshop, medical interpreters will gain confidence and efficiency when interpreting patient encounters. They will demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Stroke types, risks, and causes.
  • Neurological assessment, and medical and consent factors when using "clot buster" drugs in stroke treatment.
  • Stroke care in hospitals' ICUs and/or stroke wards.
  • How stroke medications work, procedures for calling EMS for suspected stroke patients, and assisting in the patient's safe transfer home after a hospital stay.
